Standards of Justice Podcast
Challenging traditional ideas around what it means to serve justice
Through compelling firsthand accounts and thoughtful conversation, this season explores how treatment courts are transforming the justice system’s approach to people impacted by substance use and mental health disorders by prioritizing recovery, health, and community. Hosted by All Rise director of communications Chris Deutsch, we present a vision of justice grounded in an understanding of what works, what doesn’t, and an abiding belief in people’s capacity to change.

Leading the way on equity and inclusion
While racial, ethnic, gender, and other disparities persist in the justice system, treatment courts present a unique opportunity to tackle these issues head-on. In the newest installment of “Standards of Justice,” host Chris Deutsch sits down with Rachel Lindley, the director of diversity, equity and inclusion at the Maryland Office of the Public Defender.
Rachel has trained treatment courts across the country and offers an invaluable perspective on how to approach Standard II: Equity and Inclusion. She lays out the first steps toward understanding how it relates to your program, offers guidance on having uncomfortable conversations in a safe and judgment-free way, and explains why equity and inclusion is an ongoing journey.
Ultimately, this conversation is about how treatment courts can ensure equitable access, retention, and program completion for all.
Who belongs in treatment court?
Former New Hampshire Superior Court Chief Justice Tina Nadeau walks us through the key takeaways from Standard I: Target Population and addresses some of the common barriers treatment courts face during its implementation.
The conversation touches on determining who is high-risk/high-need, managing proximal and distal goals, understanding motivation for change, and building resource capacity to ensure that these individuals’ needs are met.

When justice heals
The premier episode of “Standards of Justice” features a conversation with treatment court alumna, certified peer recovery support specialist, and National Treatment Court Alumni Association co-founder and board member Deena Davis.
Deena bravely shares her story and offers invaluable insight into:
- What it’s like to sit across from the treatment court team for the first time feeling scared and ashamed,
- Examples from her time in treatment court that reveal the why behind participant behavior, and
- Her transition from participant to alumna to treatment court team member, and an incident during staffing that was both devastating and the impetus for meaningful change.
This is a must-listen for everyone working to advance treatment and recovery.
