Motivational Interviewing for Judges
Motivational Interviewing for Treatment Court Judges
Registration deadline: December 3, 2024
On Thursday, December 5, All Rise will host a virtual training session, “Motivational Interviewing Session: Empowering Judges Working in Treatment Courts.” This interactive, practice-based training is designed to equip judges with the essential knowledge and skills required to implement Motivational Interviewing (MI) in a treatment court setting.
This training is supported by the Office of National Drug Control Policy and presented by All Rise in collaboration with the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
What is Motivational Interviewing?
MI is a goal-oriented, collaborative method that empowers individuals to discover and harness their own motivations for change. Evidence shows that the role of the judge is critical in assisting justice-involved individuals impacted by substance use and mental health disorders. Judges often witness firsthand the barriers that individuals face in their recovery journeys, including a perceived lack of motivation. By integrating MI techniques from the bench, judges can effectively support individuals in overcoming these barriers, enhancing their motivation, and promoting positive behavioral changes. MI also allows judges to engage with individuals more meaningfully, fostering a sense of collaboration and commitment to change.
Session Goals
- Understand key concepts: Participants will be introduced to the fundamental principles of MI.
- Develop practical skills: Participants will practice tools to effectively engage with individuals impacted by substance use and mental health disorders, ensuring that judges leave the session with tangible skills to apply in their courtrooms.
- Promote positive outcomes: Participants will explore strategies to integrate MI with court practices, fostering a supportive environment that encourages recovery and improves individual outcomes.
Who Should Attend
This training is only open to judges and magistrates currently and directly working with a treatment court docket.
